Cave – LIAF – Week 3

This week was a busy week!

Monday

I started off the week completing my research and design work for the third shot, with the knight and horse. Jan, the director, picked me for this role as last term I created a knight character. I really enjoyed making that character so was happy to be apart of the creation of this one too!

Here are some of the reference images I collected

I was designing both the horse and knight for this shot so was looking designs that were historically accurate but also easy for us to work with.

Here is what I came up with!

And here are the layout tests with both characters included;

Tuesday

I then did some very basic animation so we could put him into the animatic we had to see how the timing worked.

I continued my research for the film by looking into cave paintings, here are some paintings I compiled

Wednesday

It was our turn to film our LAV – Live Action Video references, it was great to have access to the big space and some props from around the room, it really helped us work on the timing and spacing for our shots.

After this I started to work on creating some animation for the horse and sourcing a reference video we us. I knew I had some videos of my horses walking and managed to find a video of one of them, Limbo walking through my garden back home. I thought it would be perfect for the what we needed.

Friday

I went into uni today to create the roughs for shot 3 and 4 which will be my shots! I used the reference footage we shot on Wednesday and the used the animatic we created a reference for spacing to create the shots in TV paint. It’s a program I’m not super familiar with but should really learn more about as it is industry standard.

Shot 4 – the kids
Shot 3 – the knight

I think I have the keys down but will need to work on the timing before I move any further with these. The most important thing is the character animation being on point so we can really express the emotions and motions of these characters.

Next week will be a busy week but I’m excited to continue on with the animation and hopefully we can really nail it down!
